Excellent Resource for Cake Decorating Design Ideas
Do you ever get stuck for design ideas when it comes to decorating a cake? Or do you have a good idea but you just need a reference to follow?
A great resource is iStockphoto.com. Unlike most stock photo/illustration websites, where prices can run into hundreds. iStockphoto.com’s photos/illustrations only cost a couple bucks. It is great resource for inspiration for whatever theme you may be planning. You can use the stock photos and illustrations as reference and templates for your design.
- If you plan to free hand pipe the icing onto the cake, you can print out the design and practice tracing over the design (this is nice for the intricate scroll work that is popular on wedding cakes).
- If free handing the icing directly onto the cake makes you uncomfortable, you can tape parchment paper over the image then pipe your icing directly onto the parchment paper, tracing the outline of the image. Put the whole thing flat in the freezer until it’s hard, then fill the image in with more icing. Freeze again until solid, then flip it onto the frosted cake and carefully pull the parchment paper away.
- You can also create a template to be cut out of rolled fondant by printing the design on cardstock, cut it out, then trace around the template with an edible marker.
Below are some great designs, in my opinion, that would do great for cake decorating! Click the images for larger preview versions. *Keep in mind that designs marked as “vector illustrations” cost more and may need specialty vector programs to view them. Make sure you check that a jpeg or png version of the vector illustration is included.
Visit iStockphoto.com and search for anything, I promise you will get some great inspiring images.
